The Notarization Process — Step by Step

Every proper notarization follows the same core sequence. Learning this order is the foundation of all notary work.

1. Identify the signer — verify identity with a valid ID 2. Review the document — make sure it is complete and ready 3. Witness the signing — when the act requires it (jurat, signature witnessing) 4. Confirm willingness — ensure the signer is acting freely and understands the document 5. Perform the notarial act — administer an oath or take an acknowledgment as required 6. Record it — make an entry in the notary journal 7. Complete and seal — sign and apply the official seal or stamp

The steps happen in order, every time. Skipping a step — even a small one — can invalidate the notarization or expose the notary to liability.
