Responding to Lockouts

Getting locked out happens even to careful, experienced sitters, and how you respond matters more than the mistake itself.

If You're Locked Out

  • Contact the client immediately for a backup entry method or a neighbor who holds a spare key
  • Never force entry, even if you're confident you could get in
  • If the home is part of a building with a property manager or doorman, ask if they can assist once the client confirms it's okay
  • Document what happened and when, and let the client know as soon as it's resolved

Staying calm and going straight to the client is always the right first move.
