Module 4: Heatstroke, Poisoning, and Allergic Reactions

Allergic Reactions

Allergic reactions often appear after an insect sting, vaccine, food, or medication.

Signs of an Allergic Reaction

  • Facial swelling
  • Hives
  • Intense itching
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Vomiting

How to Respond

  • Remove the trigger if identifiable and safe to do so, such as a visible stinger
  • Apply a cool compress to swollen areas
  • Monitor breathing closely — swelling around the face or throat, or difficulty breathing, is a medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary care
  • Do not give any human antihistamine or other medication without prior guidance from a veterinarian, since dosing differs significantly by species, weight, and formulation
