Recognizing Aggression Warning Signs

Aggression rarely appears out of nowhere. There are almost always warning signs first, and recognizing them early keeps everyone safe.

Warning Signs

  • Stiff posture and a hard, fixed stare
  • Raised hackles
  • Growling or showing teeth
  • Sudden stillness right before a lunge

How to Respond

  • Back away slowly
  • Avoid direct eye contact
  • Never punish or yell at the animal
  • Contact the client if you can't safely complete the visit

There's no shame in ending a visit early for safety. A tense situation handled calmly is always better than pushing through it.
