Bleeding
Most bleeding can be controlled with the right technique while you get to a vet.
✓Steps to Control Bleeding
- Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or gauze
- If the cloth soaks through, don't remove it — add more layers on top
- Elevate the injured area above heart level if possible
- For severe limb bleeding that won't stop with pressure, apply a firm pressure bandage, checking that you can still fit a finger underneath so you don't cut off circulation
- For nosebleeds, keep the animal calm and apply a cold compress to the bridge of the nose
Tourniquets are a last resort for life-threatening bleeding only, and should be loosened periodically. This is an advanced technique meant only to reduce blood loss long enough to reach a vet.
