Module 3: Alcohol Fundamentals
Flavor Profiles
Great cocktails are all about balance. Every well-made drink balances a combination of basic flavor elements so that no single taste overpowers the others.
✓The four key flavor elements:
- Sweet — from sugar, syrups, and liqueurs
- Sour — from citrus juices like lemon and lime
- Bitter — from bitters, Campari, and certain herbs
- Strong — from the base spirit itself
A classic example is the Whiskey Sour — it balances the strong whiskey, sour lemon, and sweet syrup into one smooth drink. If any one element is too strong, the cocktail feels off.
A good cocktail = balance. Learning to taste and adjust these elements is one of the most important skills a bartender can develop.
