Flavor Profiles

Great cocktails are all about balance. Every well-made drink balances a combination of basic flavor elements so that no single taste overpowers the others.

The four key flavor elements:

  • Sweet — from sugar, syrups, and liqueurs
  • Sour — from citrus juices like lemon and lime
  • Bitter — from bitters, Campari, and certain herbs
  • Strong — from the base spirit itself

A classic example is the Whiskey Sour — it balances the strong whiskey, sour lemon, and sweet syrup into one smooth drink. If any one element is too strong, the cocktail feels off.

A good cocktail = balance. Learning to taste and adjust these elements is one of the most important skills a bartender can develop.
