Teaching Grammar Effectively

Many new teachers are nervous about teaching grammar. They worry they do not know enough rules — or that students will ask questions they cannot answer.

You do not need to know every grammar rule to teach grammar well.

You need to know how to present language clearly, check that students understand it, and give them meaningful practice.

The goal of grammar teaching in ESL

The goal is not perfect grammar. The goal is communication. Students need to understand grammar well enough to use it — not to pass a linguistics exam.

Native English speakers make grammar mistakes all the time. What matters is whether students can communicate effectively — not whether every sentence is perfectly constructed.

Two approaches to grammar teaching

Which is better? Neither — use both. Deductive teaching is clear and efficient. Inductive teaching is engaging and helps students think. A good teacher knows when to use each.
