Creative and Academic Writing in the ESL Classroom

ESL students need exposure to both creative and academic writing — each develops different skills and serves different real-world purposes.

Tips for teaching creative writing:

  • Give a clear prompt — a blank page with no guidance is intimidating
  • Share model texts first — show what good creative writing looks like
  • Focus feedback on content and voice — not grammar (at first)
  • Create a sharing culture — read selected pieces aloud with permission
