Eye Shapes and Eye Makeup Theory

Eye makeup that works beautifully on one client can look completely different on another, largely because of eye shape.

✓Common Eye Shapes

  • Monolid — little to no visible crease
  • Hooded — a fold of skin partially covers the crease
  • Downturned — outer corners angle slightly down
  • Upturned — outer corners angle slightly up

✓Why This Matters

  • Placement of darker shades, liner, and definition typically shifts based on shape to achieve a balanced result
  • What "opens up the eyes" on one shape can close them off on another

As with contouring, this lesson builds the conceptual foundation — refining your eye makeup technique for each shape takes hands-on repetition.
