Licensing Basics: What's Required (and What Isn't) by State

One of the first questions new makeup artists ask is whether they need a license to work.

The General Rule

  • Most U.S. states do not require a specific license for freelance makeup artistry (bridal, event, or photography work)
  • A small number of states, including Louisiana and Maryland, have their own requirements for makeup services
  • Rules can also differ if you're applying makeup inside a licensed salon or spa versus working independently on location

What You Should Do

  • Check your own state's cosmetology or barbering board before starting paid work
  • Re-check if you plan to work in a different state, since rules vary
  • Keep in mind that licensing requirements can change, so don't rely on information that's more than a year or two old

This course does not constitute legal advice — when in doubt, contact your state's licensing board directly.
