Industry Certifications
In many US states, bartenders are required — or strongly encouraged — to complete a responsible alcohol service certification before they can work. These programs teach the laws and best practices for serving alcohol safely.
✓The two most recognized certifications:
- TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) — the most widely recognized program, covers intoxication, ID checking, and intervention
- ServSafe Alcohol — run by the National Restaurant Association, covers responsible service laws and procedures
✓Important things to know:
- Requirements vary by state — some require certification by law, others do not
- Certifications are usually valid for a set number of years and must be renewed
- Many employers will only hire bartenders who are already certified
- Some states require certification within a set time after being hired
Getting certified makes you more employable and shows employers you take responsible service seriously. If you plan to bartend in the US, certification is a smart investment.
