Refusing Service Professionally

Refusing service is one of the hardest parts of bartending — but also one of the most important. The goal is to stop serving while keeping the situation calm and respectful.

How to refuse service professionally:

  • Stay calm and polite — never be aggressive or judgmental
  • Be discreet — speak quietly so you don't embarrass the customer
  • Be firm but kind — do not argue or negotiate
  • Offer an alternative — water, food, coffee, or help arranging a ride
  • Get support if needed — involve a manager or security if the customer becomes difficult

Example phrases: - "I think we'll hold off on another one for now. Can I get you some water?" - "I'm not able to serve you another drink tonight, but I'd be happy to call you a ride." - "Let me get you a glass of water and something to eat."

Never blame or insult the customer. Frame it around their wellbeing — "I want to make sure you get home safe" — rather than a personal judgment.
