Where TESOL Teachers Work

TESOL teachers work in many different environments. Here are the most common:

Language Schools

Private language academies where students attend English classes. These are common in cities across the US and around the world.

Public Schools

Many US public schools have ESL programs for students whose first language is not English. These are great opportunities for new teachers.

Online Platforms

Teachers connect with students around the world through video platforms like Zoom or dedicated teaching apps. This is one of the fastest-growing areas in English teaching.

Private Tutoring

One-on-one lessons with individual students. This gives teachers maximum flexibility and can be very well-paid.

Colleges and Universities

Many higher education institutions offer ESL programs for international students.

Quick Tip: Each teaching environment is different. An online lesson with one adult student looks very different from a classroom of 20 teenagers. As you grow as a teacher, you will develop strategies for all of them.
