The best way to reinforce grammar and vocabulary is through activities that are communicative, engaging, and purposeful.

Grammar Activities

1. Error Correction Tasks

Write sentences containing common grammar mistakes on the board. Students work in pairs to identify and correct the errors.

  • Skill focus: Accuracy, noticing
  • Level: A2 and above

2. Sentence Transformation

Give students a sentence and ask them to rewrite it using a different grammatical structure while keeping the meaning the same.

  • Example: "She started working here five years ago." → (Present Perfect) "She has worked here for five years."
  • Skill focus: Grammar flexibility
  • Level: B1 and above

3. Grammar Auction

Prepare a set of sentences — some correct, some incorrect. In small groups, students "bid" on the sentences they think are grammatically correct.

  • Skill focus: Accuracy, engagement
  • Level: A2 and above

4. Scrambled Sentences

Give students cut-up words from a sentence. They race to arrange the words into the correct order.

  • Skill focus: Word order, syntax

5. Word Association

Say a target word. Students call out the first word they associate with it.

7. Matching Activities

Students match words with their definitions, synonyms, or example sentences.

  • Skill focus: Meaning, recognition

8. Vocabulary Relay Race

Divide the class into teams. Each team receives a category (e.g., "verbs for communication"). Teams race to write as many words as possible on the board in 60 seconds.

  • Skill focus: Word retrieval, fluency
  • Level: A2 and above

9. Cloze Activities (Gap Fill)

Remove key words from a text and ask students to fill in the blanks using a word bank or from memory.

10. Role Play with Target Vocabulary

Assign students a scenario and require them to use a set of target vocabulary words during the role play.
