Principles of Vocabulary Instruction

Vocabulary is the building block of language. Without words, learners cannot communicate — no matter how well they understand grammar rules.

How many words do learners need?

  • Basic communication: approximately 2,000 high-frequency words
  • Academic English: approximately 3,000–5,000 words
  • Native-like fluency: 10,000+ words

Key principles of vocabulary instruction:

1. Teach words in context

Words are easier to remember when learners encounter them in meaningful sentences or texts rather than in isolated lists.

2. Prioritize high-frequency vocabulary

Focus first on the most commonly used words in everyday English. The Academic Word List (AWL) is a useful reference for academic contexts.

3. Encourage multiple exposures

Research suggests learners need to encounter a new word at least 10–15 times in different contexts before it is retained in long-term memory.

4. Teach word families

Help students understand how words change form:

  • Teach → Teacher → Teaching → Taught
  • Communicate → Communication → Communicative

5. Promote active use

Students need to use new vocabulary in speaking and writing — not just recognize it in reading.

6. Make it memorable

Use visuals, stories, word associations, and games to make vocabulary lessons engaging and memorable.
