Module 6: Caring for Multi-Pet Households
Preventing and De-escalating Pet-to-Pet Conflict
Even pets that normally get along can have tense moments, especially around food, toys, or a stressed visit.
✓Warning Signs of Tension Between Pets
- Stiff bodies or prolonged staring between animals
- Resource guarding around food, toys, or a favorite resting spot
- One pet consistently avoiding or being blocked by another
✓If Tension Escalates
- Separate the animals calmly using a barrier, leash, or closed door — never your hands
- Avoid yelling, which can heighten the animal's stress further
- Give each pet its own space to settle before attempting to reintroduce them
- Let the client know what happened, even if it resolved quickly
Preventing conflict before it starts is always easier than breaking it up once it begins.
