Common Ethical Mistakes to Avoid
Many notaries get into trouble not through bad intent, but through carelessness or trying to be "helpful" in the wrong way.
✓Common ethical mistakes:
- Notarizing without the signer present — even for a trusted friend or family member
- Pre-dating or post-dating a notarization — always use the actual date
- Notarizing a blank or incomplete document
- Giving legal advice — explaining what a document means or how to fill it out
- Notarizing for family when there is a conflict of interest
- Letting someone else use your seal
- Notarizing to "do someone a favor" when proper procedure wasn't followed
Most ethical violations come from trying to be helpful or rushing. When a request feels "off," slow down and follow proper procedure — or politely refuse. Doing the right thing always protects you.
